Songfacts®:

  • Initially a left-wing-inspired post-punk British Rock group, Scritti Politti developed into a more mainstream pop music project in the 1980s, and Songs to Remember found the band replacing communism with romanticism. This track includes the lyric, "Don't they want to make the money/Don't they want to be the Beatles?," reflecting this change of ideals. Frontman Green Gartside explained to Mojo magazine March 2011: "It was both a finger pointing at myself and elsewhere."
