Songfacts®:

  • Every female-fronted dance act of the late '80s and early '90s needed a big ballad to slow things down (see: "Seasons Change" by Exposé). For Seduction, that was "Could This Be Love," their fifth single, but only their third as an actual group. We'll explain.

In 1988 the producers Robert Clivillés and David Cole put together a song called "Seduction" using a woman named Carol Cooper on vocals. It got some spins in clubs, so they kept the Seduction name and released another single, "(You're My One and Only) True Love," with uncredited vocals by Martha Wash, the former Weather Girl ("It's Raining Men") turned session singer. That song was a surprise hit, so they held auditions and assembled a real group, choosing a multi-racial trio: April Harris, Michelle Visage and Idalis DeLeón. They mimed Wash's vocals to make a video for "(You're My One and Only) True Love" and recorded seven songs that were added to the first two Seduction singles to make and album. Their first single as a real group was "Two To Make It Right," which went to #2 in the US. It was followed by "Heartbeat" and then "Could This Be Love."
  • Robert Clivillés wrote this song solo. It's one of the few he wrote that isn't also credited to David Cole.
  • Seduction released just one album before splitting up. Clivillés and Cole quickly moved on to another project: C+C Music Factory, which was even more successful, landing a #1 hit with "Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)." Like "(You're My One and Only) True Love," that one was also released with uncredited vocals by Martha Wash.
  • Michelle Visage and April Harris share the lead vocals on this track. Visage later sang on another Clivillés and Cole project: S.O.U.L. S.Y.S.T.E.M. with "It's Gonna Be A Lovely Day." In 2011 she became a judge on RuPaul's Drag Race.
