• If there is one universal truth in the world of pop music, it is this: no one is ever really done singing about heartbreak. Take Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco's song "Call Me When You Break Up." Despite being blissfully engaged, they recorded a breakup song for their joint album, I Said I Love You First.
• The track is an upbeat synth-pop affair, proving that, yes, you can dance while contemplating the emotional wreckage of someone else's failed relationship. The song also features Gracie Abrams, who brings her brand of heartache to the mix, ensuring that no one gets out of this track emotionally unscathed.
• Opening with the sound of an answering machine, Gomez assumes the role of the supportive friend, swooping in to replace the emotional void left by her friend's ex. Abrams takes over in the second verse, playing the role of the friend who, left "emotionally bankrupt" by the split, seeks solace in a new (or perhaps old) love interest.
• Gomez and Blanco released the song as a single on February 20, 2025, with Gomez premiering it at a fan event in London the day before. Gomez wasted no time clarifying that "Call Me When You Break Up" was not about her relationship with Blanco. "To get an obvious statement out of the way," she announced to the crowd, "This song is actually about a best friend that I have in my life. So it's not about anything if you think it is."
  
  Abrams debuted her portion of the song the same day during her The Secret of Us tour stop in Hamburg.

  American songwriters Michaels and Tranter are Gomez veterans, having co-written some of her most memorable hits, including "Good For You," "Hands To Myself" and "Bad Liar."
  
  Dylan Brady is one half of US experimental electronic music duo 100 gecs. He's also worked with Yungblud ("Memories") and Charli XCX ("Guess").
  
  Norwegian producer Cashmere Cat previously collaborated with both Gomez and Blanco on his 2016 song "Trust Nobody," which also featured Tory Lanez.
  
  Swedish duo Mattman & Robin also worked on "Hands To Myself." Their other Gomez collaborations include her "Lose You to Love Me" and "Dance Again" singles.

Gomez told Z100 New York that despite a few moments where she needed him to leave the room so she could focus, their creative partnership flowed smoothly.
• Benny Blanco and Gracie Abrams first met when she was dating producer Blake Slatkin, who at the time was Blanco's intern. Blanco co-produced the title song of her debut EP, Minor, which was followed by her featuring on his 2021 track "Unlearn."
