Songfacts®:

  • This upbeat love ballad finds Selena Gomez expressing her love for her romantic interest, regardless of the fact that the guy has hurt her before and may do so again.

You could break my heart in two
But when it heals, it beats for you
    I know it's forward, but it's true

Speaking to Beats 1's Zane Lowe, Gomez said: "I want it to be a beautiful message in a really complicated way, but really fun."
  • Stylistically, the song is a country-hued dance-pop anthem with acoustic elements, which links in with the sound of several of Gomez's previous singles. She said:

"'It Ain't Me,' 'Wolves,' and 'Back to You' all have this acoustic guitar or effect of live music with a hint of what those DJs do best, so I find that I'm attracted to those kind of records because you could strip it down […] so that is something I'm very attracted to and that's why I knew that "Back to You" would be a perfect stepping stone, because I had a hard time picking what was gonna be next."
  • "Back To You" was released as the lead single from the official soundtrack for 13 Reasons Why season 2. Gomez is an executive producer on the teen drama series.
  • Gomez wrote the song along Diederik Van Elsas, Parrish Warrington, Amy Rose Allen and Micah Premnath. The production was handled by Trackside and Ian Kirkpatrick, the latter of whom was also the mastermind behind Gomez's hit single "Bad Liar."
