Songfacts®:

  • Selena Gomez recorded "My Mind & Me" for her 2022 documentary film of the same title. The documentary reflects on the singer's six-year journey from 2015, during which she battled the autoimmune disease lupus, kidney failure, and depression, and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
  • The director of the My Mind & Me film, Alek Keshishian, is Gomez' manager's brother. He shot the 2015 music video for the pop star's "Hands To Myself" video after Gomez saw his work on Madonna's 1991 documentary Truth or Dare.
  • This confessional piano ballad finds Gomez describing her struggles to control her dark thoughts.

    My mind and me
    We don't get along sometimes
And it gets hard to breathe

However, she wouldn't alter anything. As a public figure, Gomez can relate to others with similar mental health problems.

But I wouldn't change my life
And all of the crashing and burning and breaking, I know now
If somebody sees me like this, then they won't feel alone now

By openly sharing her issues, Gomez will encourage her fellow strugglers that they're not on their own. "She's trying to give hope to others," Alek Keshishian told MTV News. "Realizing that you can pick yourself up."
  • Gomez wrote "My Mind & Me" with Amy Allen, Jon Bellion, Michael Pollack, and the production duo The Monsters & Strangers. Allen, Bellion and The Monsters & Strangers previously helped Gomez write her Rare track "Vulnerable," which has a similar theme.
  • The song materialized organically. "I went through this moment where I was allowing people into my life through my journal, these producers who worked on the song and know me very well; we've worked together for a very long time," Gomez told Vulture. "I remember releasing all of this stuff to them, and I was scared of what they were going to think. But 'My Mind and Me,' the idea and the chorus, came up, and it was really moving to me. These people took my story and made it something bigger than me. I was really grateful."
