Songfacts®:

  • This heartbreaking song describes a dysfunctional relationship where the guy only seems to able to express his love for the girl with the help of alcohol. However, the love is so good she is unable to let go.

Gomez commented during the Revival listening party: "'Sober' is kind of like my go-to for every single moment when you're in a social setting and you can just feel the presence of people feeling uncomfortable. I've experienced that. I've gone through it. I think everybody has those moments. But it's just a take on sometimes you just have to go through painful things without numbing the experience. It's very complicated, but it's also something that I think makes you stronger."
