Songfacts®:

  • This single finds Selena Gomez collaborating with electronic dance music producer and DJ Marshmello. The songstress told Zane Lowe on his Beats 1 show that Andrew Watt, a songwriter she's collaborated with for years, played her a rough version of the tune while in Japan. Watt sent the rough demo to Marshmello, and the producer "created a really cool tone and a story with it, and the song is very beautiful and personal and the lyrics just have a whole story of its own."

"Weirdly," she added, the lyrics "mirrored" something she was going through in Japan.
  • Former California Breed guitarist Andrew Watt's previous collaborations with Gomez include another EDM crossover, her Kygo collab "It Ain't Me." He's also contributed to hits by DJ Snake featuring Justin Bieber ("Let Me Love You") and Camila Cabello ("Havana").
  • Andrew Watt wrote the song with Ali Tamposi, Brian Lee and Louis Bell. The chorus lyrics have special significance to Tamposi.

I've been running through the jungle
I've been running with the wolves
To get to you, to get to you
I've been down the darkest alleys
Saw the dark side of the moon

Tamposi explained to Billboard: "We all put our personal stories in every single one of our songs and we all relate to them through our own experiences. For 'Wolves,' I was recently sober and began a new relationship with someone. Those words: 'I've been down the darkest alleys on the dark side of the moon to get to you.' It's about getting to my sobriety and this new person; a partner I was desperate for."
