Songfacts®:

  • In October 1987, a great storm swept across the south of England. In the Kent town of Sevenoaks, six of its famous oak trees were uprooted. These trees are alluded to in "The Song Of The Seven Oaks A Song Of Sevenoaks School (1432-1932)" which has words by Peter Warrick, music by John Longmire. As can be adduced from the title, Sevenoaks is one of the oldest schools in England, and was founded 8 years before Eton College. The song, in 4/4 time, was written for the Quincentenary of the School.

Anyone listening to this song might conclude that the trees had been there for hundreds of years, in fact they were planted only in 1902 to commemorate the coronation of Edward VII. Sevenoaks was actually named after William Sevenoake, who became Lord Mayor of London in 1418, and founded Sevenoaks School in his will. >>>
