Songfacts®:

  • The fourth collaboration between Shakira and her fellow Colombian singer Maluma, this sultry tune finds the pair recounting the story of a clandestine love.

Ours is illegal and I will not deny you
That I pay the sentence for kissing you
    (English translation)

Shakira and Maluma worked on the song in April 2018 in the Spanish city of Barcelona while they were in town for a Billboard magazine photoshoot.
  • Shakira and Maluma's duets have gradually been becoming more explicit in terms of talking about a forbidden passion. The remix of Shakira and Carlos Vives' single "La Bicicleta" is a nostalgic song about cycling in places of their childhood; "Chantaje" is more of a flirtatious number and "Trap" talks about a desire that remains alive even after the relationship ended.
  • Shakira and Maluma wrote the song with Édgar Barrera, who won the 2015 Grammy for Best Tropical Latin Album for his work on Carlos Vives' Mas Corazon Profundo.

"Of all the artists I've worked with, she's the most perfectionist, the most meticulous," said Barrera of Shakira to Billboard. "She knows exactly what she wants and what she doesn't want. She'll request things like a change of frequency in a kick. After working with her, I understand why she's where she's at and why she has been at #1 so many times."
  • The song topped the singles charts in a number of Latin countries including Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay and Uruguay.
  • The song's music video was filmed on the Spanish coast near Barcelona and was directed by frequent Shakira collaborator Jaume De Laiguana.
