Songfacts®:

  • "Me Gusta" is an upbeat reggaeton trap song, which Shakira sings in collaboration with Puerto Rican rapper Anuel AA. Shakira released the single on January 13, 2020, three weeks ahead of her Super Bowl LIV halftime show performance at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
  • "Me Gusta," which translates to "I Like You," is a song about a couple who have spent too much time together. They have fallen into bad habits, causing their relationship to become stagnant. Shakira sings (translated into English):

You used to take me to dinner, then to the movies and to dance
And now you forget about those details with me

Though the couple are still in love, their romance has lost its spark.
  • Shakira starts the song off by borrowing from the "ala la la la long" chorus of Inner Circle's 1992 reggae hit "Sweat." She repeats the sample a couple more times as part of the hook.
  • The song topped the Mexican singles chart and peaked at #2 in Spain. It reached the top 10 in multiple other Latin American countries.
