Songfacts®:

  • Be Myself, Sheryl Crow's tenth studio album, was cut with her regular '90s collaborator Jeff Trott, with whom she penned such hits as "My Favorite Mistake" and "Everyday Is a Winding Road."
  • Both this song and "Roller Skate" are about our dependence on social media and technology. The title track, which also touches on euphoriants, features the line: "If I can't be someone else, I may as well be myself."

"That would be the consolation prize," Crow said of the lyric to Glamour magazine. "It's a little satirical, and maybe along the dark side, but it's a reality. It's also a fun pop song, and it points out some of the absurdities of life. It just felt like that was a good title."
