Songfacts®:

  • The lead single from Sick Puppies fifth album, this is the band's first release since the arrival of singer-guitarist Bryan Scott. Their new frontman previously played with Glass Intrepid and Dev Electric.
  • Bassist Emma Anzai explained the song's meaning, saying, "You have to push regardless of what anyone tells you. This was a big thing for us. You can pray, hope, or wish for something to happen, but at the end of the day, you have to 'stick to your guns,' go out there, and believe. The song is meant to empower."
  • The phrase "stick to your guns" means to uphold one's position or argument, in spite of opposition. The image is of a soldier maintaining his position under enemy fire.
  • Emma Anzai told Loudwire the story of the song. "It was one of the first songs that we wrote with our producer Mark Holman in Nashville. It came together really fast. Actually, it was one of those things where it just kind of wrote itself and came out.

Thematically and lyrically it was really close to the hearts of us because we were going through a bit of a tough time and it was cathartic being able to write something like that and being able to put that out there for other people to hear. It's about not letting anyone tell you that you can't do something. You have to put you mind to it and no one's going to help you. You have to do it yourself. You have to stick to your guns and make something happen."
  • Lead singer Bryan Scott explained to ABC Radio that the song's lyrics reflect the Sick Puppies members' own dedication to the band. "It's really a song about perseverance," he said. "When changes happen in your life and there's obstacles, things that keep you away from the thing that you're trying to go for, you're dream or your passion - in our case, obviously music -- you just gotta stick to your guns and just go for it."
