Sigrid

Sigrid Artistfacts

  • September 5, 1996
  • Sigrid was born in Ålesund, a small town off the coast of Norway.
  • Sigrid's first time on stage was in kindergarten when she was put on stage with 200 other children. She was so nervous, she burst out crying and had to be taken off.
  • She began playing the piano at age 7 and started singing in school theater productions at 13.
  • Sigrid spent her childhood immersed in nature, listening to Joni Mitchell and Neil Young. She said she was always a "bit of a loner" as a child, and that she found comfort in nature and music.
  • In her early youth, her ambitions lay in teaching, the law, or journalism. "I didn't think music was possible for me," Sigrid said. "It's such an up-and-down life."
  • Sigrid's older brother Tellef Raabe is also a musician. He told his sister to stop performing cover versions of Adele songs at performances and challenged her to write a song she could perform at one of his gigs. Sigrid took his challenge, and in two weeks she had written a song called "Sun." Released as her debut single in 2013, the song received airplay on Norwegian radio stations.
  • Sigrid introduced the international audience to her defiant pop with her feminist anthem "Don't Kill My Vibe" in 2017. It led to her winning the prestigious BBC Sound of 2018, making her the first Norwegian artist to do so.
  • Sigrid is one of the most understated pop stars in the music industry. She often wears T-shirts and jeans when she performs live, a departure from the flashy costumes many pop stars wear. She prefers to be comfortable and practical on stage and doesn't want to be defined by her appearance.
