Songfacts®:

  • "Skate" is a funky '70s throwback that finds Anderson .Paak and Bruno Mars harmonizing on its upbeat refrain. They use roller skate metaphors to describe their seduction of a girl who has caught their eye.
  • Anderson .Paak and Bruno Mars wrote this smooth, buoyant song after imagining something they would perform in the middle of a roller rink. Mars told Apple Music they began to wonder what the bassline, guitar and drums would be doing, plus he was looking for an excuse to play the congas. "We wanted everyone to feel like they were floating and gliding, slipping and sliding," Mars said.
  • Silk Sonic released this good-time roller on July 30, 2021 as the follow-up to their Hot 100-topping hit "Leave The Door Open."
  • Bruno Mars co-produced the song with Dernst "D'Mile" Emile II. The pair also helmed "Leave The Door Open."
  • Paak, Mars and D'Mile wrote the song with:

French keyboardist Domitille Degalle and Texan drummer JD Beck. Together, they comprise the jazz duo DOMi and JD Beck.

Singer-songwriter James Fauntleroy, whose previous Bruno Mars credits include "That's What I Like" and "Finesse."
  • Mars directed the video along with Florent Déchard and Philippe Tayag. The clip sees Mars and Paak playing congas and drums as they serenade the ladies roller skating around them.
