Songfacts®:

  • This was the second Simple Plan single, following "I'm Just A Kid." It was their first to make an impact in America, thanks to MTV, which put the video on their hit show Total Request Live.

This song is about that one person you would do anything just to be with, anything to make them laugh and make them happy. Unfortunately, it's not working out and the girl has left him. He thinks he has one last shot to get her back, but it's not likely. >>>

  • Mark Hoppus of blink-182 and +44 sings on the bridge ("I close my eyes and all I see is you") and appears in the video. Blink-182 led the way for Simple Plan and was huge in 2002; having Hoppus on the track gave them plush endorsement. >>>

  • Here's the Mark Hoppus connection: Lead singer Pierre Bouvier and Chuck Comeau had a band called Reset before they joined Simple Plan, which played some shows with blink-182. Comeau stayed in touch with Hoppus, and when blink played the Warped Tour in Toronto in 2001, Simple Plan made the trip from Montreal and "full-on fangirled outside their bus." Comeau knocked on the door and delivered the demo of "I'd Do Anything" to Hoppus, who later emailed him to say he loved it. When Simple Plan asked him to sing on it, he agreed.
  • This was one of the songs Simple Plan had on their demo tape that helped land them a record deal. They pooled their money and sent the demos to labels via FedEx, which gave them a better chance of being opened. Andy Karp at Lava Records opened his and ended up signing the band after seeing them play live.
  • In 2002, this appeared in the movie The Hot Chick and in the What's New, Scooby-Doo? episode "It's Mean, It's Green, It's the Mystery Machine."
  • Along with "I'm Just A Kid," "I'd Do Anything" was one of the first songs Bouvier and Comeau wrote together, and both ended up on their first album. "The demo version of that song is quite different," Bouvier told Songfacts. "The intro riff is different, the chorus is pretty much exactly the same, but everything else got changed. That was one of the very early songs."
