Songfacts®:

  • This was inspired by the concept of the European Community. The EC's star symbol is tattooed on vocalist Mick Hucknall's arm.
  • The Stars album and particularly this song marked a comeback by Simply Red, who had been in decline after hitting it big in 1985. In fact, many consider this LP to be their best work. This was the lead song and it was a big hit in Great Britain and a moderate one in the United States. The lyrics are fairly typical of love songs, but it really struck a cord with adult contemporary fans. >>>

  • Know how you can name a star after somebody? Simply Red's management did this to promote the song, naming stars after program directors at many radio stations in an effort to garner airplay.
