Songfacts®:

  • In this song, Sinéad O'Connor tells the story of her early years when she left Ireland and came to London to make music. She was in a local band called Ton Ton Macoute, but the scout for Ensign Records was only interested in her. The label flew her to London and set up a recording session that led to a solo deal and the release of her first album, The Lion And The Cobra, in 1987. She was 18 when she signed the deal and 20 when the album was released.

Moving to England to become a singer was a bold move, and her father was justifiably concerned. In this song, she assures him that she's OK and lets him know she loves him.
  • O'Connor wrote this song with Dave Stewart of Eurythmics, who has a history of collaborating with distinctive female singer songwriters; with Eurythmics his partner in crime was Annie Lennox, but he also worked on the No Doubt song "Underneath It All" with Gwen Stefani, and on many of Joss Stone's tracks.

Stewart, who also produced the song and played guitar on the track, is the one who suggested the topic: He had Sinéad to write a song about moving to London.
  • This is part of Sinéad O'Connor's fifth album, Faith And Courage. As she alludes to in the lyric, she had two children by this time, son Jake and daughter Roisin. The song finds her in a good place, happy and proud of her accomplishments. It was her first album since Universal Mother six years earlier. Dave Stewart was one of several producers brought in to contribute.
