Songfacts®:

  • Skrewdriver frontman Ian Stuart Donaldson died from injuries resulting from a car crash in September 1993; he was the same age as Phil Lynott, but music and dying young were about the only things the two men had in common.

Donaldson was a self-confessed Nazi, and most of his music reflected this, none more so than "The Snow Fell," which is unarguably his greatest song. While few people will agree with his perception of Adolf Hitler as the man who nearly saved Western civilization, all but die-hard Stalinists - and there are a few left - will share his view of that other great leader.

Hitler-wise, this song may be viewed as complementary to Al Stewart's "Roads To Moscow," and Stalin-wise to "Joe The Georgian," though without the humor.
  • "The Snow Fell" has also been covered by the alluringly named Prussian Blue, who look as good as Britney Spears (and sing just as badly), but the definitive version is the piano-based recording by Saga.
  • Ideology aside, this mournful ballad is a song for anyone who believes in a dream, and keeps the faith after that dream is shattered forever. >>>
