Songfacts®:

  • This dreamy R&B number finds Skrillex teaming up with Justin Bieber and the Houston singer-rapper Don Toliver. It finds both Bieber and Toliver hoping their significant others never leave their side. "The song is a beautiful mess of organic energy melting together," Skrillex told Apple Music. "For every 100 people listening to it, I hope there are 100 different interpretations."
  • Hailey Baldwin has been Justin Bieber's songwriting muse since they tied the knot in 2018. His vocals here, where he sings about hoping Hailey stays with him, have a similar theme to his collaboration with the Kid Laroi, "Stay."
  • Skrillex created the woozy and bassy production with Bernard "Harv" Harvey. Kansas City-born Harv first hooked up with Bieber in 2010 when he was recruited to play bass for the teenage singer's band. He began supplying the Biebs with beats and produced several songs for him, including the singles "Forever" and "Peaches."
  • Skrillex and Justin Bieber are frequent collaborators, dating back to when the Canadian pop star supplied vocals for the Jack U hit "Where Are U Now." The Californian producer contributed to five tracks in total on Purpose, including the hit singles "Sorry" and "I'll Show You." Six years later they teamed up again for three of Bieber's Justice tracks: "2 Much," "Somebody," and "Loved by You."
  • This was Don Toliver's first time collaborating with either Skrillex or Justin Bieber.
  • When Skrillex and Harv wrote this song, they were working together three or four times a week. "We probably did like 50 ideas, just Skrillex and I, because we were in the studio all day playing instruments, freaking songs, changing songs, and then "Don't Go" happened," Harv recalled to Consequence.

Songwriter Aldeae was also in the studio with them, and as Skrillex and Harv played a melody, he started singing, "Don't go home."

They liked the idea, completed the song, and sent it on to Bieber.
  • Skrillex and Harv wrote the song while Bieber was making his album Justice. It was supposed to go on the Bieb's record, but Skrillex decided he wanted it to be his song.
