Songfacts®:

  • Sky Ferreira is an American singer-songwriter and actress from Los Angeles. At 15 she passed on a demo to Swedish production duo Bloodshy & Avant, who have written and produced several of Britney Spears' hits including "Toxic" and "Piece of Me." They also make up two thirds of Miike Snow.
In early 2009 Ferreira provided guest vocals on a Shoes remix of The Virgins "Teen Lovers." Six months later she signed to EMI and started work on her debut album with the help of such A-list producers as the aforementioned Bloodshy & Avant, as well as Paul Epworth (Annie), Greg Kurstin (Lily Allen) and Dallas Austin (Sugababes). Ferreira eventually released her debut single "One," on June 1, 2010 at the age of 17. And yes, the song was produced by Bloodshy & Avant.
  • Ferreira explained the song to The Sun newspaper: "I wanted to put it with a really pretty melody and a dance beat to contrast with it, It's a little confusing but I like that. It's about numbers as a metaphor for how you meet somebody."
  • Ferreira told Digital Spy the story behind the song: "It's about being in a relationship where you're ignored - any type of relationship, not necessarily romantic. It's about that point where you don't feel anything - you don't feel happy, you don't feel sad but you want to feel something. It's a situation I was in and I think everyone's been in. There's always someone in a relationship who wants more attention and starts trying too hard to please the other person. The thing is, the more you try to please that person, the less effort they make because they know you'll do anything they want. It's that stage I'm singing about on 'One.'"
