Songfacts®:

  • The opening track of Eton Alive, singer Jason Williamson told Uncut that "Into the Payzone" discusses "the solitary unit leaving its house, going into town, consuming and then going back into its private property."
  • The Eton Alive album title sprang from a conversation Williamson and manager Steve Underwood were having about the current political landscape. "We were talking about the disaster that is British politics," Williamson explained to Q Magazine. "We'll look back at this time and call it an atrocity. Well you've got the politicians running out of ideas how to pull the wool over people's eyes and with capitalism and everything else falling to bits, you've got these corporations run by people who were educated at private colleges and the likes of David Cameron and Boris Johnson who went to Eton."

When Williamson suggested "Eton Mess" as an album title, the Sleaford's manager responded, "What about 'Eton Alive'?"

He added: "It's bleak, but it's quite comical as well in some respects."
