Songfacts®:

  • We Are Not Your Kind kicks of with this one-and-a-half-minute atmospheric track that finds Corey Taylor "counting all the killers" over sweeping waves of sound. His voice then melts into distorted chaos.

Asked by Loudwire who the killers are, Taylor replied: "It's a metaphor for counting all the ways that you've been minimalized, marginalized - all the things that have been laid on you like an issue and the things that have been laid on you like a scapegoat. You're counting all the things that are slowly killing your identity."

We Are Not Your Kind's closing track, "Solway Firth," opens with a similar lyric:

Today, up on this hill, I'm counting all the killers
  • Percussionist Shawn "Clown" Crahan told Apple Music the song introduces the record by saying after waiting for everybody else, they're now arriving. "It's like being on a foothill overlooking the ocean, and just seeing everybody making their way through rough waters," he explained. "It's an aligning. Insert the coin. Let's go."
