  • "Spit It Out" was written in retaliation to childish mudslinging by a handful of individuals who worked at the Des Moines, Iowa radio station Lazer 103.3. Back in 1996, Slipknot and 35-Inch Mudder were the up-and-coming metal bands in the city, but Lazer 103.3 took the position that Mudder was better and went on the offensive against Slipknot. The rival rock station in Des Moines, 107.5 The Dot, sided with Slipknot and against Mudder. The rivalry got rather heated, pitting the two bands against each other.

Slipknot signed with Roadrunner Records in 1997 and included "Spit It Out" on their 1999 self-titled debut album with the label. In interviews, they were careful not to mention 35-Inch Mudder by name, instead taking the position that there was no real metal scene in Des Moines. 35-Inch Mudder faded away a few years later, so Slipknot clearly won that battle. The Des Moines metal feud was a stark contrast to the Seattle music scene where the bands supported each other and talked each other up whenever possible.
  • When Slipknot released this song in 1999, the radio station they were beefing with, Lazer 103.3, was running a syndicated show out of Chicago called Mancow's Morning Madhouse, which got into the fray by broadcasting fragments of the song and having Slipknot perform at their "Lazer Luau" in Des Moines that year. Eventually, the station gave up on the beef and added the song to their rotation.
  • The 2000 digi-pak of Slipknot's self-titled album includes a rough mix of this song known as the "hyper version."
  • The music video is based on the Stanley Kubrick movie The Shining, but with the members of Slipknot in the main roles. Kubrick explored themes of madness and mental breakdowns in a lot of his films, as do many Slipknot songs.
  • Slipknot drummer Chris Fehn (#3) told Songfacts about shooting videos: "The video that we did for 'Spit It Out,' Ice-T showed up, so it was rad, dude. We got to meet Ice-T, and he hung out on the video shoot and everything, and took pictures with us. That's the coolest thing. Otherwise, they suck, dude. It's so boring. Like, you play the song a million times, you know, and you can barely hear it through these stupid little monitors they give you. It's just such a long, drawn-out day that it's tough. So videos blow."
  • Whenever Slipknot play "Spit It Out" live, they do what's called the "zero bulls--t" at the bridge. Lead singer Corey Taylor tells all the fans in the crowd to get down on their knees and jump up when he says "jump the f--k up," at which point the crowd goes crazy. The line "Jump the f--k up" replaces the line in the recording, "Good enough, had enough."

  • IssamealecI love nu metal, it's my entire life

If it stayed, I'd never leave it
    If that turned around
I'd grieve the special dirty things
That we used to talk about
I mean that loving you is strange
    And adored by me throughout
    Oh no, it's you again

  • Jeremy from Laffeyette, LaI totally agree with William. And that's all I'm saying.
  • Phillip from Las Cruces, NmIt's very interesting to see arguments about music. Genres are meaningless now, there are so many different sub-genres and bands, what they all do, is play music. I myself like the old Slipknot. REAL Slipknot fans won't/don't care about someone else's opinion, what basically Slipknot stood for. Let people have their opinions, I don't care if you hate or love Slipknot, I do like them, and they aren't the best out there.
  • Yo-mama from Las Vegas, NvOk William so you dont like slipknot thats your opinion. but if thats true then why are you looking up slipknot songs. and also Led Zeppelin is good but Black Sabbath are the creators of Metal.
  • Hayley from Mckinney, Txslipknot is awesome. i think that alot of their songs have a message like other bands but alot more people can relate to things the band has gone through..
  • Jake from Sydney, Australiathe "overcaffenaited hyper mix" is wa better than the original. i saw these guys live and they rocked hard. gold!
  • William from Ocean Springs, MsSlipknot is a great band, but there are so many better metal bands to listen to.
  • Gordy7 from Havaland, TxSlipknot has really evolved as a band.
