Songfacts®:

  • Smash Mouth guitarist and lead songwriter Greg Camp wrote this song. He told Songfacts: "If you've ever been on a tour bus, you've seen what happens - it's crazy. You drink and do stupid things and you wake up the next day and go, 'What was I thinking?' Of course I was doing that long before we started going on the road, and I'm sure I'll be doing it long afterward."
  • Greg Camp explained: "'Then The Morning Comes' was written in my little garage studio at my old house just after we got back from the first tour. It's basically about being on the road and how every day is like Groundhog Day - partying with friends and fans after the show, waking up feeling terrible and tired, then doing it all over again. The line that says 'push rewind' refers to how it's like starting the same tape over as soon as it's finished. You get caught up in the moment with everybody after the show, knowing you'll be hurtin' the next day - but you get up and do it again anyway. We did it for years and years. We still do. I can't believe we've survived it. Steve once said in an interview that I wrote it about him, but it's more about all four of us during that first tour."
  • This was Smash Mouth's follow-up single to "All Star," which was a hit in the summer of 1999. "Then The Morning Comes" was released in the fall and made a slow climb up the chart, peaking at #11 in January 2000.

  • Annabelle from Eugene, OrThe intro contains a recording of an alarm clock saying, "Good morning!". This is possibly the Timex Speakeasy Alarm Clock. The same "Good morning!" voice can also be heard when one would dial the time service in Baltimore, 410-844-1212.
  • Me from North East, AzThis song is about going through a crazy night, and waking up the next morning and wondering what you were thinkin when you did it.
