Songfacts®:

  • Bones was originally intended for a romantic comedy movie before Soccer Mommy – real name Sophie Allison – decided to keep it for her own body of work. Speaking of the guitar-heavy track, Allison said "Bones" is "about struggling with the parts of yourself that you don't like in a relationship."

"It's about wanting to become better for someone and feeling like you're standing in your own way," she added.
  • This was the first track Soccer Mommy worked on with Daniel Lopatin, the producer for her third album, Sometimes, Forever. Lopatin, who records as Oneohtrix Point Never, is big in the world of electronic dance music, a genre a few steps away from Soccer Mommy's country-tinged pop. The odd pairing worked out well. Starting with "Bones," they developed a quick rapport and laced the album with sounds that mash-up their backgrounds. Lopatin's electronic influence is best heard on the track "Unholy Affliction."
  • Alex Ross Perry directed the music video, where we see Soccer Mommy perform a warehouse-bound rendition of the track, interspersed with a trip to the cemetery.
