Songfacts®:

  • Soccer Mommy is Sophie Allison, a singer-songwriter and musician from Nashville. This epic song is from her second album, Color Theory. She organized the record into three sections: blue, representing depression and isolation; yellow, honing in on physical and mental sickness; gray, representing a void of death and loss.
  • Allison's mom has had a terminal illness since the early 2010s. The singer used to push it to back of her mind but when she toured her 2018 Clean album, she started worrying that time is slipping away. Allison explained to NME this song is about being away from her mom while she's ill at home. "I felt like I was losing time there with her, even though she's alive and fine," she said. "It's about when you feel like something's fleeting and it starts to get scary."
  • Allison explained to Apple Music that this song is about the toll that a loved one's sickness can have. "It's about being faced with something that is a little bit visceral even for a short, short time," she said. "Anything can happen at any second. You're not immortal, your people die, and people get ill. At any time, things can change. Anything can change."
  • Asked by Pitchfork if she listened to the song with her mom, Allison replied:

"God, no. I gave her the album and I was like, 'Just don't talk to me about it.'"

Allison added that she feels awkward "with open, emotional, gushy discussions." Instead, the singer said what she needed to say in the song itself.
