Songfacts®:

  • Sofia Carson co-wrote and recorded "Come Back Home" for the soundtrack to the 2022 Netflix romantic musical film Purple Hearts. Its story follows the relationship between aspiring singer-songwriter Cassie Salazar (played by Carson) and Marine recruit Luke Morrow (Nicholas Galitzine). After the two agree to marry for the mutual gain of the military marriage benefits, things take an unexpected turn.
  • In the movie, Cassie wrote "Come Back Home" after Luke had been deployed to Iraq. She penned it about being open about your emotions and understanding that it's OK to be scared.
  • After previewing the song to a barracks of recruits over video chat, Cassie performs the completed version at an Oceanside festival outside the gates of Camp Pendleton with her band. She dedicates "Come Back Home" to the soldiers fighting for their lives and their country.
  • Having initially presented a façade to Cassie of not worrying about his future, Luke later confessed to her he is scared of both the marriage and Iraq. When "Come Back Home" goes viral, Luke asks Cassie if he'd been the inspiration for the song. Cassie concedes he might have been.
  • "Come Back Home" also plays at the end of the movie as the credits play out.
  • Carson wrote "Come Back Home" with Justin Tranter (Justin Bieber's "Sorry," Selena Gomez' "Good For You"). Three members of Tranter's Facet Publishing team - Daniel Crean, Eren Cannata, and Skyler Stonestreet - helped with the writing. Crean and Cannata also produced the track and played all the instruments.
  • Carson and Tranter wrote two different versions of "Come Back Home" but went with the one that is used in the film. "And once we did, we just fell in love with it. And we knew that, that was our song," Carson told Billboard. "It just really captured the soul, the tenderness of this moment, the vulnerability at this moment - and truly the heart of our story."
  • The stripped-down version of the song also appears on the Purple Hearts soundtrack.
