Songfacts®:

  • Over a funky dancehall groove, Solange fondly remembers carefree times smoking blunts in Saint Laurent. The word "Binz" does not appear in the lyrics and is likely a working title Solange kept.
  • R&B legend The-Dream croons the chorus.

Can't no see me, no flex, be kind
Dollars never show up on CP time

Colored People's time (also abbreviated to CP time) is an American expression referring to a negative stereotype that African Americans frequently turn up late. His money, though, is always on time.
  • Solange co-produced "Binz" with Panda Bear of Animal Collective. They recorded the percussion-filled track in a house in Estoril, Portugal. "We met and kinda just talked for three-quarters of the first day." Panda Bear recalled to Uncut magazine. "She had rented a drum kit, and we started playing and seeing what would come out. Eventually, we made a vocal loop and built a song around that. It all happened without any planning or forethought; it just grew out of this experience of hanging down together. She was very down for whatever. It was brief but super cool."
  • Solange ends the track with a clip from Alexyss K. Tylor's Vagina Power: Halloween Show. "Binz" also samples late '60s psychedelic soul group Rotary Connection's "Didn't Want to Have to Do It."
  • Shot entirely on webcam, the self-directed video shows Solange happily dancing solo. We see her twerking in the kitchen and in the darkened living room with various wardrobe changes throughout the clip.
