Songfacts®:

  • For the Don't Give Up on Me, the legendary Bluesman Solomon Burke recorded songs written by several famous songwriters that were either written specifically for him or had been unreleased. This song was written by Joe Henry, who in addition to being Madonna's brother-in-law, is a renown musician whose compositions include "Skin" by Rascal Flatts and "Don't Tell Me," which Madonna turned into a hit. "Flesh And Blood" is typical of Henry's songwriting: an atmospheric organ-driven minor-key ballad.
Henry also produced the album, which won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album.
