Songfacts®:

  • "Kool Thing" was Sonic Youth's first major-label single; the video was also the band's first for a major label.
  • Public Enemy's Chuck D contributes some vocals in the song. The collaboration came about as Public Enemy and Sonic Youth were both recording albums in the same small studio. Singer and guitarist Thurston Moore told City Limits: "It was real exciting for us. We're big fans. They were aware of us – I think they were kind of curious about us. Their scene is aware ours exists, but it all melts together. So, you know, we might as well be Blondie!... Chuck was around, Kim (Deal) asked him if he'd come in, do the song, say those lines –and he elaborated on it a bit, and grooved along."
  • "Kool Thing" was inspired by an encounter between Kim Gordon and LL Cool J. Gordon had interviewed the hip-hop star for Spin magazine in the late '80s and came away both intrigued and faintly amused by the cultural disconnect between their worlds.

A fan of his stripped-down breakthrough album Radio, Gordon was especially curious about the influence of producer Rick Rubin and the rock elements creeping into LL's sound. When she asked LL what rock music he liked, his answer - "Bon Jovi" - struck her as unexpectedly mainstream, and perhaps not quite the edgy crossover she'd imagined.

The experience highlighted a wider divide. Around the same time, Gordon conducted an informal "survey" outside CBGB, asking young punk fans what they thought of LL Cool J's latest record. Many didn't even know who he was. "I guess that proves how much of a bubble the punk scene was," she reflected to The Guardian.

That mixture of curiosity, irony, and cultural tension fed directly into "Kool Thing," which playfully probes ideas of authenticity, race, and coolness, all while sounding like it's having far more fun than it probably should.
