Songfacts®:

  • Written entirely by Chris Cornell, the Soundgarden lead singer considered this a companion song to "Fell On Black Days," which also deals with ennui and depression. Speaking about "The Day I Tried To Live" with Entertainment Weekly, Cornell said: "The attitude I was trying to convey was that thing that I think everyone goes through where you wake up in the morning and you just don't know how you are going to get through the day, and you kind of just talk yourself into it. You may go through different moments of hopelessness and wanting to give up, or wanting to just get back into bed and say f--k it, but you convince yourself you're going to do it again. And maybe this is the last time you're going to do it, but it's once more around."

  • Rampage from Netherlandshis issue was with wanting to break free from the satanic industry, seeing how they abused children was the thing that broke him.
    he was all with the evil and darkness playing around until he found out his soul really was in the hands of the devil and he needed to break free
  • Muzykaddykt from FranceI may be wrong, but I think it was not easy for Chris Cornell – RIP – to deal with fame, money and glory. These lines:

    — "I stole a thousand beggars' change and gave it to the rich » (record companies making a lot of money while some poor fans buy his music);
    — "I dangled from the power lines and let the martyrs stretch » (he's living among powerful people, while there are more and more people pushed to extreme poverty, giving their life for various causes, etc.)
    — "I wallowed in the blood and mud with all the other pigs » (he dislikes filthy rich people who don't give a care about the price other pay for them, or are oblivious of what the poor go through);

    … sound like he was feeling guilty about being rich and disliked fame, being rich and living among other rich people.
