I Never Enjoyed My Operation More

Album: The Spirit of '78 (1967)

Songfacts®:

  • What sort of song contains the lines:

    "I really enjoyed my appendectomy,"

    "And I loved my hysterectomy"

A novelty song? Alas, no. "I Never Enjoyed My Operation More" is a number from a show called The Spirit of '78 that was commissioned by a company called Converters Inc. It put on this bizarre musical not for the public but for the Converters Incorporated presentation to the American Hospital Supply Division National Sales Meeting, at The Abbey, Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, on September 6, 1967.

The show was performed once, but was recorded. Unfortunately!

The reference to 78 was apparently a sales quota system for Surg-O-Pak paper hospital supplies and gowns.
  • Converters Incorporated was still going strong in March 2012 when singer-songwriter Will Young presented a BBC Radio 4 programme that featured "I Never Enjoyed My Operation More" and other "industrial songs." It would appear then, that bizarre though this song and musical may be, it helped launch a successful company. >>>
