Songfacts®:

  • "853-5937" was Squeeze guitarist Glenn Tilbrook's phone number. He wrote it as a jingle for his answering machine (in the '80s, a clever answering machine message was a big deal), and decided to make it into a song. It became Squeeze's second highest-charting song in America, after "Hourglass," but Tilbrook hates the song and has always kept it off of Squeeze's compilation albums. (Read more in our interview with Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford of Squeeze.)
