Songfacts®:

  • This is the title track of Squeeze's first all-new album in 17 years. It took a request from writer/broadcaster Danny Baker for soundtrack music for the TV version of his childhood memoir for the group to take the plunge. "Cradle" was the first song they wrote and it was so good the series was named after it. (For more on Squeeze, read our interview with the band's Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford.)
  • Squeeze performed this song on the BBC One politics program The Andrew Marr Show on January 11, 2016. British Prime Minister David Cameron was another guest and he looked on a few feet away as the band changed some of its lyrics. In an act of protest against the Conservative Party's policies, they sang: "I grew up in social housing, part of what made Britain great, there are some here who are hell-bent, on the destruction of the welfare state."
