Songfacts®:

  • St. Lunatics are a hip-hop group from St. Louis, Missouri, formed in 1996 by Nelly, Ali, Murphy Lee, Kyjuan, City Spud and Slo'Down. The latter left the group after a dispute. The group quickly got signed to Universal Records, but then City Spud, who is Nelly's half brother, was arrested and sentenced to 10 years in prison for first-degree assault. After Nelly's breakthrough solo success with Country Grammar, the St. Lunatics released their debut album, Free City, in 2001. The record, which was titled as part of their campaign to support the release of City Spud from prison, contained such hits as "Summer in the City" and "Midwest Swing". After City Spud was released in 2009, he reunited with Nelly and the St. Lunatics to record their second album, City Free. The album was never released, but "Polo" appeared as a single.
  • The song title is a nod to the Polo clothing line. It follows in the footsteps of past Nelly hits like "Stepped On My J'Z," which was a tribute to the Nike Air Jordan sneakers. Nelly told MTV News that type of record is a sincere effort by his crew. "We're good for those novelty records like that," he said. "But I think we do it best. We can't help it. It's a part of that culture [in St. Louis]. All of [those records] was banging! Stop me when it don't work."
