Songfacts®:

  • This is the first of three "humming interludes" on St. Vincent's sixth album, Daddy's Home.

    Listenin' in the kitchen
    My mother fixin'
    Something missin'
And all the while, she's hummin'

When asked about the significance of the humming interludes by Uncut magazine, St. Vincent replied: "My mother hums constantly. At some point I thought, my gosh, if only I had a mic next to her my whole life, imagine the accidental symphonies she's written for the wind. But it also symbolizes a certain kind of feminine strength that my mother, more than anyone I know, embodies. No matter what hardships come, you just have to keep humming."
