Songfacts®:

  • This is a song that has doubtless been used on many a stag night and played at many a wedding since it was introduced in the 1956 Broadway musical My Fair Lady.

Like the rest of the score it has music by Frederick Loewe and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner, who also wrote the book. The film appeared in 1964, in which it is performed by Stanley Holloway as Alfred P. Doolittle [Doolittle, Harry, Jamie and costermongers to be precise]. Doolittle is a working class Englishman and father of the leading lady Eliza (played by Audrey Hepburn). Having come into some money, he decides to make an honest woman of his live-in lover - who will of course become Eliza's stepmother.

Like Rex Harrison who performed "Why Can't The English?" Holloway also appeared in the original Broadway production. "Get Me To The Church On Time" has been recorded by Nat King Cole - in 1964 - and by Frank Sinatra on January 28, 1956 with Count Basie and his Orchestra, among others. >>
