Songfacts®:

  • Steve Aoki has been friends with Blink 182's drummer Travis Barker since the mid-2000s and the DJ has wanted to collaborate with the pop punk band for a long time. They had been working on various ideas since 2010 but it wasn't until this song that anything emerged apart from a remix of the trio's 2016 single, "Bored To Death."
  • "Why Are We So Broken" was first created in producer John Feldmann's studio with Aoki recording Blink 182's contribution. He then brought it to his studio and started mixing, making sure both the rock and electronic sides of their collaboration were represented as much as possible. The DJ told Billboard it took him a long time to combine the two - "it's more difficult than you think."
  • The song features typically melancholic Blink lyrics about troubled partners with Aoki's contrasting uplifting basslines.

I had a feeling you were troubled
The night I pulled you from the rubble
When will we release this disaster piece?

Aoki commented: "Why Are We So Broken is a typical blink-182 song title. They're just witty, and they always have a dark twist to their lyrics. As you sing along, you realize you're singing along to is some weird lyrics."
