Songfacts®:

  • Barton wrote this song after a particularly difficult day of seeing his dad in the hospital. In a press release, Barton explained that the line "Spinning like a top, tell me how to stop it all" summed up exactly how he was feeling after that day.
  • This was the first song Barton played for producer Marvin Etzioni when he first pitched the idea of writing and recording an album entirely by himself. One night, Barton went to Etzioni's house and played all of the songs that would become Projector for him. The duo got to work shortly after and recorded the album using old reel-to-reel tape recorders.
  • Barton says this is one of favorite songs on Projector and that it's probably the one he's most proud of writing. Barton also says this song also changed from the time it was written to the time it was recorded. When we spoke to him in 2012, he told us that this song was a little faster and louder until he started playing it on a 12-string guitar. He also said this song reflected the influence that David Bowie had on him. (Here's our full interview with Steve Barton.)
