Songfacts®:

  • In this uplifting ode to his wife Jo, Steve Hackett gets celestial, singing about a love that transcends past our earthly boundaries. In a Songfacts track by track, he described it as "a cross between a rock song and a love song," adding, "It's very much about my wife and myself, and it's somewhat philosophical: the reasons for living, who you are and who you're with. All of that."
  • The song is part of The Circus And The Nightwhale, a largely autobiographical concept album with a main character named Travla as a proxy for Steve. "Wherever You Are" is the 12th of the 13 tracks, wrapping up on a positive note, with light conquering darkness. It was released as the second single from the album, following "People Of The Smoke," which takes us back to London in 1950 when Hackett was born.
  • Hackett was the guitarist in Genesis from 1971-1977. His first album with the band was Nursery Cryme, which includes a 10-minute track with three-part harmony guitar called "The Musical Box," which he says was an influence on "Wherever You Are."
