Songfacts®:

  • The original house dance in its early Chicago form, jacking was at first a frenzied move, which involved a kind of whole body spasm interspersed with outbreaks of pogoing. Later the moves became more minimal, with tracks such as Steve "Silk" Hurley's "Jack Your Body" evoking a robotic minimalism.
  • "Jack Your Body", originally released in 1986, was a simple repetition of the phrase 'Jack, jack, jack, jack, jack your body' over a looped bassline plundered from soul group First Choice's club classic, "Let No Man Put Asunder". The single spent two weeks at #1 in the UK during January and February 1987.
  • The first Chicago house record to top the UK charts, "Jack Your Body" ignited Britain's jacking craze of 1987 and paved the way for the acid house sound that was popular there during the late 1980s.
  • This wasn't the first Chicago House record to reach the UK singles chart. That honor goes to Farley "Jackmaster" Funk, whose "Love Can't Turn Around" reached #10 the previous year. Hurley, who at one time shared an apartment with the Jackmaster, claimed the track had plagiarized one of his own productions, and the pair stopped speaking to each other.
  • Steve Hurley refused to promote the track as he preferred to concentrate on completing J.M. Silk's Hold on to Your Dream album. Instead the video used slapstick comedy dancing clips from the 1930s, including an appearance by Charlie Chaplin.
