Songfacts®:

  • This was one of Sting's later hits. Surprisingly, he originally wrote and performed it for a beer commercial for the Japanese Kirin Brewery Company. The only prerequisite was that it had to contain the word "together."
  • The video is notable for featuring actress Trudie Styler, whom Sting later married. >>>

  • Sting recorded this as a duet with Annie Lennox for the soundtrack of the movie Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason.
  • The music video, directed by Mary Lambert, was based on the 1949 Jean Cocteau film Orpheus. Sting told Billboard in 1999: "It's a very surreal film set in modern times, after the war. This person playing Orpheus goes through a door and suddenly he's in the Underworld and has to rescue Eurydice. There's good woman and bad woman in it, but we didn't steal much of the film, just the opening scene."
  • Eric Clapton played guitar on the song's original recording, but Bryan Loren took over in subsequent takes. Clapton's version can be heard on the compilation Fields of Gold: The Best of Sting 1984–1994.
