Songfacts®:

  • Strawberry Guy is the solo project of the Welsh-born, Liverpool-based musician Alexander Morgan Stephens, formerly a keyboardist for The Orielles. This song is an introspective baroque-pop tune about feeling mentally unmoored and begging a half-mythical "Mrs Magic" to clear his head.
  • The song was inspired by a bad magic mushroom trip that left him feeling like his sense of self had disappeared. "I'd never done any psychedelics before, and I was expecting this really big, grand sort of show, like a hallucinogenic festival in my mind," Stephens told NME. "But instead, I felt like everything that made me 'me' was gone. That's what the whole song's about; it's me saying, 'I don't know what I'm doing here', while I have no idea where the f--k I am. It was terrifying!"
  • Stephens began Strawberry Guy in 2018 and released "Mrs Magic" as a single in 2019, including it on his debut EP, Taking My Time to Be. For the original version, he was working mostly on his own in a bedroom setup, using samples for the orchestral textures.
  • The track did not explode immediately on release but steadily picked up momentum; in late 2020 it started to blow up on TikTok as a soundtrack to aesthetic and nostalgic clips, eventually featuring in tens of thousands of user videos. Strawberry Guy attributed its surge in popularity to the COVID-19 lockdowns, believing people had the urge to listen to music that was calm or would make them feel better.
  • In 2023, Stephens revisited the track with a more luxuriant arrangement, recording a version with real strings at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios. For this rendition, Stephens remained the sole writer and producer, bringing in Polly Virr on cello, Liz Lister on viola, and an uncredited violinist to perform his arrangements. The addition of live strings nudged the song further into chamber-pop territory, emphasizing the elegant harmonic shifts that had already made the bedroom version quietly distinctive among TikTok-era discoveries.
  • "Mrs Magic" eventually blossomed into a long-tail sleeper hit. The track reached the the Hot 100 for the first time in January 2026, buoyed by renewed TikTok circulation and streaming playlist support.
