  • Stray Kids are a South Korean boy band formed by JYP Entertainment - one of the "Big Three" K-pop labels alongside SM and YG Entertainment. Rather than being assembled in a boardroom by music executives (as groups like the Backstreet Boys or One Direction were), Stray Kids came together through an unusually democratic process: Bang Chan, the group's eventual leader, personally handpicked each member from JYP's pool of trainees in 2017. The group then had to prove their worth on a reality TV show called Stray Kids, but with a twist - instead of competing against each other, they worked together, performing self-composed songs with the shared goal of debuting as a unit.
  • The Stray Kids reality show ran from October 17 to December 19, 2017, and served as both a proving ground and a savvy marketing campaign - their debut single, "Hellevator," was strategically released on November 1, 2017, timed to coincide with the show's broadcast and introduce the group to a waiting audience.
  • The group launched with nine members, but in October 2019, member Woojin departed for undisclosed personal reasons, leaving the band as an eight-piece that remained surprisingly intact in an industry where lineup changes are common.
  • Three members - Bang Chan, Changbin, and Han - moonlight as a production trio called 3RACHA (pronounced "three-racha"), formed in 2016, a full year before Stray Kids debuted. This in-house team writes and produces the majority of Stray Kids' music, a level of creative control that is rare in K-pop, where acts are typically handed songs by label executives. 3RACHA wrote and composed the group's breakthrough hit "God's Menu."
  • Stray Kids' sound combines elements of hip-hop, electronic music, dubstep, and aggressive trap-pop - a far cry from the bright, bubbly pop associated with most K-pop acts. Korean media have coined the term "mala taste" to describe their distinctive sonic identity, a reference to a Sichuan spice blend known for its numbing, mouth-scorching intensity. Critics have called it "noise music," though fans argue the catchy hooks and tuneful bridges make it anything but.
  • When their March 2022 EP Oddinary topped the US Billboard 200, Stray Kids became only the third K-pop act ever to lead it, following BTS and SuperM. That was just the beginning: they became regular visitors to the top of that chart, and in 2025 surpassed BTS when their album Karma became their seventh Billboard 200 chart-topper.
  • Their 2025 album Karma was the second-best-selling album in the world in 2025, second only to Taylor Swift's The Life of a Showgirl. That statistic doesn't include streaming or airplay, just sales (digital or physical), which indicates that their fans are very engaged and willing to pay for their music, just like the Swifties.
  • Their 2024-2025 "dominATE" world tour was huge, selling nearly 2 million tickets across 54 shows on five continents. In North America the tour generated $76 million, setting a mark for the highest-grossing and best-selling North American leg ever for a K-pop act.
  • The concert film Stray Kids: The dominATE Experience was released on February 6, 2026 and topped the global box office that week. This was the weekend of the Super Bowl, which wasn't a problem because there's not much crossover between NFL and Stray Kids fans.
