  • Suede singer Brett Anderson lost his mother, Sandra, to cancer in 1989, the year he formed the band. This introspective song serves as a moving tribute to his late mum, but also strikes a forward-facing tone. Rather than being a lament about how much he misses her, "She Still Leads Me" talks about his mother still having a positive effect. "My mum was an amazing, unique woman," Anderson told The Sun. "Three decades after she died, she is still my guiding light."

"Like with everyone's mum, she's the most important person to me or certainly in the top three," he added. "It's your mum, your wife and your kids, isn't it?"
  • "She Still Leads Me On" is the opening track of the Autofiction album. "'Autofiction' means half memoir and half fiction, almost like stylized memoir," Anderson told NME. "It occurred to me that every song I've ever written has been autofiction, that every piece of art is autofiction, partly the artists' experiences and partly the artists' manipulation of the experiences."
  • But I loved her with my last breath
And I loved her with a love that was strong as death
And I loved her when she was unkind
And I loved her, I loved her, a dangerous mind

Anderson was in his early 20s when he lost his mother. Her death devastated him to the point he could not attend her funeral. "Lots of the record is about my disorders, my hangups, my faults," he told NME. "A lot of it is dredging up the past, and talking about my mother in one of the songs was me delving into those thoughts."

"The album is me trying to talk quite honestly about myself as a 50-something man," he added. "I'm not trying to pretend I'm in my 20s any more, I'm trying to think about the reality of the s--t that you have to deal with in your head."
  • "She Still Leads Me On" acts as a companion piece to "Life Is Golden" a track about Anderson's son from Suede's 2018 album The Blue Hour. "One is written from parent to child and one from child to parent," he explained.

Several of the songs on Suede's 2016 album Night Thoughts were inspired by Anderson's relationship with his son and stepson, and how that mirrors his own relationship with his father. "Family is where my passion lives now," he said. "In your 20s, it's all about girlfriends that you're splitting up with."
  • Suede released "She Leads Me On" as the lead single from Autofiction on May 23, 2022. The album received universal acclaim from music critics; both Louder Than War and MusicOMH named Autofiction their album of the year.
