Songfacts®:

  • Summer Walker is an Atlanta R&B singer-songwriter signed to LVRN. Her debut album, Last Day of Summer, was released in 2018.
  • This seductive R&B jam is the lead single from Last Day of Summer. Produced by Arsenio Archer, "Girls Need Love" finds Walker singing of her need for affection and sexual attention.

    Won't you be my plug
    You could be the one,
We could start with a handshake, baby
I'ma need more than a hug

Released on July 26, 2018, the song was Summer Walker's breakthrough hit, reaching the Top 10 of Billboard's R&B Songs Chart.
  • Singer and actor Trevor Jackson decided to pay homage to "Girls Need Love" by recording an answer song of sorts "Boys Need Love 2." Jackson's version is a male perspective on why, yep, boys do need love too.
  • Summer Walker garnered a major co-sign when Drake jumped on a remix. Walker released a cover of the Toronto rapper's Scorpion cut, "Peak," in September 2018 and it's likely it was this that bought the Atlanta songstress to Drizzy's attention.
  • During the Toronto MC's verse he promises to provide Summer with "late-night attention."

You just need some, someone that's calm and patient
    Submission, domination
Arched back, deep stroke, white wine, weed smoke, that's my best combination

Drake is suggesting that he's the answer to Walker's love needs.
  • Summer Walker told Billboard she first started speaking with Drake after the rapper tweeted a direct message in which he said, "I saw your video on a bowling alley monitor. Thought it was cool."
  • "Girls Need Love" started with Walker's rough arrangement. When she got together with producer Arsenio Archer they tried to figure out what was going to be the chorus. Eventually, they hit on making two different choruses. "We just extended one part," Archer recalled to Learning In The Open. "So, we had to leave the room and she added some more harmonies, and layers to it. It all happened in one afternoon."
