Songfacts®:

  • SuRie was chosen via a combined public and jury vote to represent the United Kingdom at the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest after the singer-songwriter's track "Storm", er, stormed to victory on BBC 2's Eurovision: You Decide show.
  • SuRie - real name Susanna Cork - is a Royal Academy of Music graduate, who has provided backing vocals for Coldplay's Chris Martin and Will Young. She is a Eurovision Song Contest veteran having first featured as a back-up singer and dancer for Belgian act Loïc Nottet in 2015 before taking the role of Musical Director for the 2017 Belgian entry Blanche. SuRie told Graham Norton on his BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show that she never really considered representing a country herself.

"It opened my eyes to what an incredible experience Eurovision is," she said. "Then they asked me if I would consider being one of the vocalists, and I hadn't actually really thought about that and so I said, 'Well, if the track is right.'"

SuRie added: "And I heard a few different ones and 'Storm' popped up and I said, 'Yeah, I'll have a bit of that.'"
  • The uptempo dance ballad was co-written by Sean Hargreaves who has previously worked with the likes of Alison Moyet, Michael Buble and Natalie Imbruglia.
  • During her performance of the song at the Eurovision grand final in Lisbon, SuRie had her microphone grabbed by Dr ACactivism, a self-declared "philosopher, activist and DJ/MC" who shouted: "Nazis of the UK media, we demand freedom." However, the voters showed little sympathy for the UK singer being interrupted by the stage invader as she finished third to last.
