Songfacts®:

  • Derek Andrew Safo is a Ghanaian British Hip-Hop artist who performs under the stage name of Sway. After recording a number of solo singles, his first break came under the name "Sway DaSafo," when his track "On My Own" reached the A-list of BBC Radio 1Xtra in 2002. Sway's reputation rose from underground to mainstream when he achieved his first top 40 hit with "Little Derek" in 2005 and won a MOBO award for Best Hip Hop Act the same year. In 2007 he signed to Akon's Konvict Muzik, becoming the only UK artist to be signed to the label. Sway has diversified into other musical genres by featuring on songs with other British artists, including rock band Kaiser Chiefs with whom he collaborated on "Half The Truth". This first single from Sway's third album Deliverance became his biggest hit to date after being championed by BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe.
  • The UK remix features British MC Kano, whose previous collaborations include the Gorillaz track, "White Flag." Sway also recorded another remix with American rapper and producer Lupe Fiasco ("The Show Goes On.")
  • The single borrows from Loleatta Holloway's 1980 disco song "Love Sensation," which was made famous by Black Box when they sampled it on their 1989 hit "Ride on Time."
  • Speaking with PyroMag, Sway stated the mission behind his Deliverance album: "I've been through a lot in my 28 years so far on this earth, some bad more good," he said. "I want to produce something that will inspire and motivate people into pushing towards their dreams & desires, sounds cliché but I mean it. It's a real uplifting project."
  • Sway is a cousin of grime MC Lethal Bizzle and also of Ghanaian international footballer Quincy Owusu-Abeyie.
