Songfacts®:

  • This was the Sweet's first UK Top 10 hit, and their second single to chart in the UK (after "Funny Funny" which reached #13, also in 1971). Despite only topping the charts once (with 1973's "Blockbuster"), Sweet managed to reach #2 five times: Co-Co, "Ballroom Blitz," "Hell Raiser," "Teenage Rampage" and "Fox On The Run." >>>

  • This song has an island theme, utilizing a steel drum and a chorus of "Ho-chi-ka-ka-ho Co-Co." It was not typical of Sweet's sound, which was usually more Rock.
  • This was one of the first songs composed by the songwriting team of Mike Champman and Nicky Chinn. They wrote many of Sweet's early songs and most of the hits for Suzi Quatro and Smokie.
  • Session musicians rather than the band themselves played on the Sweet's early hits. In this instance vocalist Brian Connolly alone was present at the recording session.
  • This was a monster hit worldwide, topping the chart in over 10 countries including Germany and South Africa.

  • Zabadak from London, EnglandNote that the band did not play on their first five releases although they sang on them and, indeed, played on the B-sides, which were frequently heavier. The flip of "Co-Co" was "Done Me Wrong Alright", which is an excellent example of this.
