Songfacts®:

  • Taylor Swift released this breakup track as the closing song on her 2021 re-recorded Fearless album. It is one of six previously "From the Vault" songs that never made the original record's track list.
  • The song finds Swift driving away after splitting from her beau. It seems it was the guy who instigated the ending of the relationship as she still loves him, but all she has now is his sympathy. She is in a state of disbelief as a relationship she was so sure of has unexpectedly ended.
  • This is a revamp of a song titled "The One Thing," which was previously leaked but never released officially. Swift subsequently tweaked multiple lyrics, including substituting:

'Cause you took me home but you just couldn't keep me

    For:

From the one thing I thought would never leave me
  • Swift wrote the song with Liz Rose, one of her principal collaborators on her first three albums. She co-produced the track with another of her frequent collaborators, Jack Antonoff. The two first worked together on Swift's 2013 song "Sweeter Than Fiction" for the soundtrack of One Chance.
